7. Joshu Washes the Bowl
趙州のお椀洗い
【公案】
A monk told Joshu: "I have just entered the monastery. Please teach me."
ある僧が趙州に言った。「私は僧院に入門したばかりです。どうぞ私に教えを与えてください。」
Joshu asked: "Have you eaten your rice porridge?"
趙州は尋ねた。「米がゆは食べ終わりましたか。」
The monk replied: "I have eaten."
僧は答えた。「食べ終わりました。」
Joshu said: "Then you had better wash your bowl."
趙州は言った。「ならお椀を洗いなさい。」
At that moment the monk was enlightened.
その瞬間、僧は悟った。
【評唱】
Mumon's comment: Joshu is the man who opens his mouth and shows his heart. I doubt if this monk really saw Joshu's heart. I hope he did not mistake the bell for a pitcher.
無門のコメント──趙州という男は、口を開いて心を見せた。あの僧が本当に趙州の心を見抜いたかどうかは怪しい。鐘（かね）と甕（かめ）を取り違えることがなければと思う。
【頌】
It is too clear and so it is hard to see.
A dunce once searched for a fire with a lighted lantern.
Had he known what fire was,
He could have cooked his rice much sooner.
当たり前すぎて、かえって見ることができない
愚か者が火のついたともし火を使って火を探していた
火が何であるかを知っていれば
もっと早く米が炊けただろうに

※Had he known what fire was,...：仮定法の倒置文。"If" が省略されている。
※He could have cooked his rice much sooner：本文の rice porridge を踏まえた言い回し。
