43. Shuzan's Short Staff
首山の棒
【公案】
Shuzan held out his short staff and said: "If you call this a short staff, you oppose its reality. If you do not call it a short staff, you ignore the fact. Now what do you wish to call this?"
首山は短い棒を取り出して言った。「もしこれを棒と呼べば、実在に反する。もしこれを棒と呼ばなければ、事実を無視している。さあ、これを何と呼びたいか。」
【評唱】
Mumon's comment: If you call this a short staff, you oppose its reality. If you do not call it a short staff, you ignore the fact. It cannot be expressed with words and it cannot be expressed without words. Now say quickly what it is.
無門のコメント──もしこれを棒と呼べば、実在に反する。もしこれを棒と呼ばなければ、事実を無視している。それは言葉をもって表現することはできず、言葉を用いずに表現することもできない。さあ、これが何であるか、速やかに言いなさい。
【頌】
Holding out the short staff,
He gave an order of life or death.
Positive and negative interwoven,
Even Buddhas and patriarchs cannot escape this attack.
棒を掲げて
彼は生死の命令を与えた
肯定と否定が交錯する
ブッタたちも先師たちもこの攻撃から逃れられない
