4. A Beardless Foreigner
髭のない外国人
【公案】
Wakuan complained when he saw a picture of bearded Bodhidharma: "Why hasn't that fellow a beard?"
或庵は髭のあるボーディダルマの絵を見てぼやいた。「なぜあの男には髭がないのか。」
【評唱】
Mumon's comment: If you want to study Zen, you must study it with your heart. When you attain realization, it must be true realization. You yourself must have the face of the great Bodhidharma to see him. Just one such glimpse will be enough. But if you say you met him, you never saw him at all.
無門のコメント──もし禅を学ぶなら、真剣に学ばなければならない。悟りを得るときには、それは真の悟りでなければならない。自分自身がボーディダルマの顔になれば、偉大なボーディダルマに会うことができる。そのような対面であれば、ひと目だけで十分である。しかし、自分はボーディダルマと会ったと言うようであれば、ボーディダルマと会ったことにはならない。

One should not discuss a dream
In front of a simpleton.
Why has Bodhidharma no beard?
What an absurd question!
分からない者の前で
夢を語ってはならない
なぜボーディダルマに髭がないのか
なんとばかげた問いであろうか

※Bodhidharma：「西天の胡子」とは、禅宗初祖である菩提達磨のこと。日本語訳は、英訳の訳語にならって“ボーディダルマ”とのインドの言葉のカナ表記とした。この英訳では、中国人については日本語読みのローマ字表記としているが、西域の人についてはインドの言葉のローマ字表記を採用している。
