38. An Oak Tree in the Garden
庭の柏の木
【公案】
A monk asked Joshu why Bodhidharma came to China.
ある僧が趙州になぜボーディダルマが中国に来たかを尋ねた。
Joshu said: "An oak tree in the garden."
趙州は言った。「庭の柏の木。」
【評唱】
Mumon's comment: If one sees Joshu's answer clearly, there is no Shakyamuni Buddha before him and no future Buddha after him.
無門のコメント──趙州の問いがはっきりと分かるならは、彼の前にシャカムニ・ブッダはなく、後に未来のブッダはない。
【頌】
Words cannot describe everything.
The heart's message cannot be delivered in words.
If one receives words literally, he will be lost,
If he tries to explain with words, he will not attain enlightenment in this life.
言葉ですべてを説明することはできない
心のメッセージは言葉で伝えることはできない
もし言葉を文字通り受け取れば、迷ってしまう
もし言葉で表現しようとすれば、今生で悟りを得ることはない
