36. Meeting a Zen Master on the Road
通りで禅師に会う
【公案】
Goso said: "When you meet a Zen master on the road you cannot talk to him, you cannot face him with silence. What are you going to do?"
五祖が言った。「通りで禅師に会ったときは、話してはいけない。沈黙して向き合ってもいけない。どうすべきか。」
【評唱】
Mumon's comment: In such a case, if you can answer him intimately, your realization will be beautiful, but if you cannot, you should look about without seeing anything.
無門のコメント──このような場合に適切に答えられるなら、その悟りは美しいが、答えられないのであれば、何かを見ることなく注意しなければならない。
【頌】
Meeting a Zen master on the road,
Face him neither with words nor silence.
Give him an uppercut
And you will be called one who understands Zen.
通りで禅師に会って
言葉でなしに沈黙でもなしに向き合う
顎打ちをくらわせれば
禅を理解した者と呼ばれるだろう

※you should look about without seeing anything：「也（ま）た須らく一切処に眼（まなこ）を著（つ）くべし」。原文は、どのような状況でも目を開いていなければならないの意味。
※look about：見回す、用心する。
