34. Learning Is Not the Path
学びは道ではない
【公案】
Nansen said: "Mind is not Buddha. Learning is not the path."
南泉が言った。「心はブッダではない。学びは道ではない。」
【評唱】
Mumon's comment: Nansen was getting old and forgot to be ashamed. He spoke out with bad breath and exposed the scandal of his own home. However, there are few who appreciate his kindness.
無門のコメント──南泉は歳を取って恥を忘れてしまった。彼は臭い息でしゃべり、自分の家の失態を晒してしまった。しかしながら、南泉の親切さに感謝する者は少ない。
【頌】
When the sky is clear the sun appears,
When the earth is parched rain will fall.
He opened his heart fully and spoke out,
But it was useless to talk to pigs and fish.
空が澄み渡り、太陽が現れ
地が乾くと、雨が降る
彼は完全に心を開き、語り出した
しかし豚や魚に話しかけても無駄である
