33. This Mind Is Not Buddha
心はブッダではない
【公案】
A monk asked Baso: "What is Buddha?"
ある僧が馬祖に尋ねた。「ブッダとは何ですか。」
Baso said: "This mind is not Buddha."
馬祖は言った。「心はブッダではない。」
【評唱】
Mumon's comment: If anyone understands this, he is a graduate of Zen.
無門のコメント──これが分かれば、禅は修了だ。
【頌】
If you meet a fencing-master on the road, you may give him your sword,
If you meet a poet, you may offer him your poem.
When you meet others, say only a part of what you intend.
Never give the whole thing at once.
道で剣の達人に道に会えば自分の剣を与える
詩人に会えば自分の詩を与える
その他の人に会ったときは、自分の思いを少しだけ言いなさい
決してすべてを一度に与えてはならない

※This Mind Is Not Buddha（タイトル）：「非心非仏」。原文の字義は英訳のように「心は仏ではない」の意味に解釈できるが、日本では伝統的に「心でなく、仏でなく」のように解釈されることが多いらしい。
