29. Not the Wind, Not the Flag
風でなく、旗でなく
【公案】
Two monks were arguing about a flag. One said: "The flag is moving."
二人の僧が旗について議論していた。ひとりは言った。「旗が動いている。」
The other said: "The wind is moving."
もうひとりは言った。「風が動いている。」
The sixth patriarch happened to be passing by. He told them: "Not the wind, not the flag; mind is moving."
六代目の師がそこをちょうど通りかかって、二人に語った。「風ではなく、旗でもない。心が動いているのだ。」
【評唱】
Mumon's comment: The sixth patriarch said: "The wind is not moving, the flag is not moving. Mind is moving." What did he mean? If you understand this intimately, you will see the two monks there trying to buy iron and gaining gold. The sixth patriarch could not bear to see those two dull heads, so he made such a bargain.
無門のコメント──六代目の師は言った。「風ではなく、旗でもない。心が動いているのだ。」この意味は何か。これが本当の意味で分かるようなら、二人の僧が鉄を買って金（きん）を手に入れようとしていることが分かるだろう。六代目の師は二人の頭の悪さを見るに耐えず、売り買いに参加してしまった。
【頌】
Wind, flag, mind moves,
The same understanding.
When the mouth opens
All are wrong.
風が旗が心が動く
いずれも同じ理解である
口を開けば
すべてが誤りになる
