27. It Is Not Mind, It Is Not Buddha, It Is Not Things
心でなく、ブッダでなく、ものでなく
【公案】
A monk asked Nansen: "Is there a teaching no master ever preached before?"
ある僧が南泉に尋ねた。「どの師も説法したことがないような教えはあるでしょうか。」
Nansen said: "Yes, there is."
南泉は言った。「はい、あります。」
"What is it?" asked the monk.
「それは何ですか。」僧は尋ねた。
Nansen replied: "It is not mind, it is not Buddha, it is not things."
南泉は答えた。「それは心でなく、ブッダでなく、ものではありません。」
【評唱】
Mumon's comment: Old Nansen gave away his treasure-words. He must have been greatly upset.
無門のコメント──年老いた南泉は自分の宝のような言葉を与えてしまった。南泉はまごついたに違いない。
【頌】
Nansen was too kind and lost his treasure.
Truly, words have no power.
Even though the mountain becomes the sea,
Words cannot open another's mind.
南泉は親切さのあまり自分の宝を失ってしまった
まことに言葉には力がない
山が海になることがあったとしても
言葉が人の心を開くことはできない

※It Is Not Mind, It Is Not Buddha, It Is Not Things（タイトル）：「不是心仏」。
※It is not mind, it is not Buddha, it is not things（本文）：「不是心、不是仏、不是物（ふぜもつ）」。華厳経の一節に照らし合わせると、原文の「物」は衆生を指していると解釈できる。英訳では、字義通り“物”と解釈して "things" と訳出している。
