21. Dried Dung

干からびたくそ

【公案】

A monk asked Ummon: "What is Buddha?"

ある僧が雲門に尋ねた。「ブッダとは何ですか。」

Ummon answered him: "Dried dung."

雲門は答えた。「干からびたくそだ。」

【評唱】

Mumon's comment: It seems to me Ummon is so poor he cannot distinguish the taste of one food from another, or else he is too busy to write readable letters. Well, he tried to hold his school with dried dung. And his teaching was just as useless.

無門のコメント──どうやら、雲門は貧しくてものの味も分からず、忙しすぎて読める手紙も書けなかったようだ。なんとまあ、雲門は自分の一派を干からびたくそで支えようとした。彼の教えは役立たず同然だ。

Lightning flashes,

Sparks shower.

In one blink of your eyes

You have missed seeing.

稲妻が光り

火花が飛び散る

一回のまばたきでも

見過ごしてしまう
