12. Zuigan Calls His Own Master
瑞巌が自分の主人を呼ぶ
【公案】
Zuigan called out to himself every day: "Master."
瑞巌は毎日、自分自身に呼びかけた。「ご主人さま。」
Then he answered himself: "Yes, sir."
そして自分自身に答えた。「はい。」
And after that he added: "Become sober."
さらに付け加えて言った。「目覚めていなさい。」
Again he answered: "Yes, sir."
また答えた。「はい。」
"And after that," he continued, "do not be deceived by others."
「これからは」、続けて言った、「他人にだまされることのないように。」
"Yes, sir; yes, sir," he answered.
「はい、はい。」彼は答えた。
【評唱】
Mumon's comment: Old Zuigan sells out and buys himself. He is opening a puppet show. He uses one mask to call "Master" and another that answers the master. Another mask says "Sober up" and another, "Do not be cheated by others." If anyone clings to any of his masks, he is mistaken, yet if he imitates Zuigan, he will make himself fox-like.
無門のコメント──年老いた瑞巌は自分を売ったり買ったりしている。彼は人形芝居を始めようとしている。ひとつの仮面を「ご主人さま」と呼ぶのに使い、別の仮面で主人に答えた。一方の仮面は「目覚めていなさい」と言い、別の仮面は「他人にだまされることのないように」と言った。もしどれかの仮面に固執するなら、それは誤りである。といって、もし瑞巌のまねをするようなら、自分をきつね扱いすることになる。
【頌】
Some Zen students do not realize the true man in a mask
Because they recognize ego-soul.
Ego-soul is the seed of birth and death,
And foolish people call it the true man.
禅の学生たちの中には仮面の中の本当の人に気付かない者がいる
そういう者はエゴ・魂を認めるからである
エゴ・魂は生死の種子であり
愚かな人々はそれを本当の人と呼ぶ

※Master：「主人公」。英訳で "yes, sir" という受け答えがあるので、ここでは「師」ではなく「ご主人さま」と訳した。
※he will make himself fox-like：「惣て是れ野狐の見解（けんげ）ならん」。第二則（Hyakujo's Fox）を念頭に置いた表現。
